Women’s rights advocacy group Femen has declared April 4 as International Topless Jihad day in support of Tunisian student Amina Tyler. Ms. Tyler posted pictures of herself topless with anti-islamic slogans written on her bare breasts to her Facebook page. This occurred in mid-March 2013.
Islamic supporters hacked Femen’s Facebook pages and replaced the topless photos with quotes from the Quran and other Islamic religious scriptures.
“This day will mark the beginning of a new, genuine Arab Spring, after which true freedom, freedom without mullahs and caliphs, will come to Tunisia! Long live the topless jihad against infidels! Our tits are deadlier than your stones!” the group wrote in a statement on its Facebook page.
“We’re free, we’re naked, it’s our right, it’s our body, it’s our rules, and nobody can use religion, and some other holy things, to abuse women, to oppress them,” Femen member Alexandra Shevchenko said at a small demonstration in front of a Berlin mosque amid temperatures near the freezing point.
“And we’ll fight against them. And our boobs will be stronger than their stones.”
Some Islamic holy men issued statements that Ms. Tyler could be stoned as punishment for her blasphemous postings. Femen leaders responded to the stoning fatwa by saying their breasts were stronger than Islamist stones.
Femen members and other supporting feminists staged Topless jihad rallies outside Tunisian embassies and Islamic religious centers throughout Europe on Thursday. Several dozen protestors staged a rally outside Femen’s international headquarters in Paris, France. Police arrested several protestors at this rally and other rallies as well. Many demonstrators used body paint to write slogans on and near their breasts. Many signs were also abundant at the rallies. “Free Amina” and “Bare breasts against Islam” were popular slogans for these signs.
Some supporters were very concerned about Ms. Tyler’s safety. She is allegedly staying with family members to avoid her detractors.
