Lost Turtle Found 10 Months Later Buried Under Rubble

Cambridgeshire, England – Sydney the tortoise went missing from his home ten months ago. The tortoise was a gift by Mrs. Yvette White to her partner Paul Bodger in 2011.

However, this past June the beloved pet disappeared.

The couple searched the home, premises, and surrounding area for an entire fortnight (14 days) before concluding they would never see Sydney again. As it turns out, what the couple needed to locate their pet was a J. C. Bamford or JCB (British-made backhoe), reports the Daily Mail.

The couple decided to build an extension to their home. Bodger used the JCB to clear the ground for the foundation. As soon as he sprayed the clearing with pesticide, he noticed a curiously shaped rock – curious in that it was shaped like a tortoise.

It turns out that his beloved pet had wandered just outside the home in June and dug itself into the ground where it hibernated.

White, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, said: “I was amazed he had survived so long.

“We used to keep him in a controlled environment with a temperature set at around 25 or 26 degrees and we never let him hibernate.

“When he got out in June it looks as if he mistook the cool summer for winter and burrowed underground.”

Bodger says that the reptile tank he was kept in would never cool sufficiently to allow him to hibernate. Whether the tortoise would have been able to come out of hibernation on his own is anyone’s guess, but what is for certain is that he was buried five feet deep at the time the JCB uncovered him.
