Rat Meat Passed off as Mutton
A Chinese restaurant, located in China, thought they would be smart and save money on food costs. This restaurant was trying to pass rat meat off as mutton. Other animals, or critters as they are often referred to, were also used.
Almost 1,000 people were arrested in the rat meat ring. Not only did they serve this meat to customers, they took in almost $1million in revenues. Not only was the meat prepared and sold in restaurants, some members of the ring took things even further. There were a few that were seasoning meat from rats, mink and fox at local meat markets.
Despite their best efforts, and confiscating over 20,000 pounds of the tainted meat products, police in China say that these types of food related crimes are still going to happen. While they are strict on how food is prepared in China, it is impossible to catch every person that tries to sneak in other items or meats that are not for human consumption.
The idea to serve this meat came after the H7N9 virus scare and the over 10,000 rotted pig carcasses in a Shanghai water source were found. Consumers were afraid to eat poultry and pork so the ring was started to bring revenue back to meat markets and restaurants.
