Truly Giving: Charles Ramsey Refuses Free Burgers for Life
Charles Ramsey, who became a household name after rescuing three kidnapped women from their decade-long stay in captivity, and who rejected any form of payment for the rescue, is now taking his generosity one step further by refusing to receive free burgers for life. The connection between burgers and Ramsey began when the Cleveland man stated in an interview that he had to put down his Big Mac in order to help break down the door that prevented the three women from escaping.
Now restaurants around Cleveland are not only offering Ramsey free hamburgers for life, they’ve also begun naming burgers after him. Ramsey’s attorney, Patricia Walker, released a statement from Ramsey stating that the hero “wants everyone to know that he does not endorse the consortium of Northeast Ohio restaurants who are offering ‘Ramsey Burgers’ or who are promoting that Ramsey can receive free burgers from them for life.”
Ramsey also wants everyone to know that he does not endorse the consortium of Northeast Ohio restaurants who are offering ‘Ramsey Burgers’ or who are promoting that Ramsey can receive free burgers from them for life.
The man himself added:
“I never told these people they could use my name for this.”
Macdonald’s has kept pretty quiet on the issue. MSN Money suggests they may be trying to distance themselfs from Ramsey.
Given that revelation, McDonald’s may not want to risk tying its brand to a flawed hero. After all, the burger chain’s brand is valued at $90.2 billion, ranking it No. 4 among the world’s 100 most valuable brands.
What, then, does the hero of Ohio want? Ramsey requests that people should “do things that will help the victims”.
In recent weeks dirt has been dug up on Ramsey’s less than perfect past, pointing out the bevy of domestic issues he has dealt with. The fact that he has not only requested that any reward he would have received go to the victims, as well as denying free burgers for life and requesting people help the three women instead, may just prove that one’s past does not necessarily reflect on all of their personality.
What do you think Ramsey’s no burgers stance?
