Anna Ayala quickly became known in the news media as the “Chili Finger Lady” when she complained about a severed digit she allegedly discovered in a bowl of chili she was served at a Wendy’s fast food restaurant, only to have her story discredited as a lie.
She was given a four-year prison sentence for concocting that story in an attempt to extort Wendy’s. Now Ayala is telling tall tales once again which has added another two-year sentence to her prison term.
Ayala told police officials that it was two unknown assailants who shot her son in the ankle when in reality her son accidentally discharged his own weapon and injured himself in the foot. Ayala concocted the whopper to prevent police authorities from discovering that her son was illegally in possession of a firearm, a felony with which he was eventually charged.
The Chili Lady invented detailed reports of two men who ‘shot’ her 26-year-old son outside their home in San Jose, California.
Junior Reyes told them that he had been attacked by a pair of men for ‘for no rhyme or reason.’
After she and her son got their tales mixed up, police arrested them both in February.
Ayala was charged with being an accessory to a felony and filing a false police report.
The Chili Finger Lady was arrested on three felony charges to which she pleaded no contest in return for a two-year sentence. Her son, Guadalupe Reyes, was also charged with a felony and received a two-year sentence because he already has a prison record and knew it was illegal for him to be in possession of a gun.
According to the Daily Mail, Ayala’s husband, Jaime Plascencia, had bought the digit for $100 from a co-worker who lost it in an accident. He then took it home where Ayala cooked it before depositing it in her meal on March 24, 2005.
‘I don’t know if it was someone she knew who she described or how she came up with the description,’ said Santa Clara County prosecutor Bret Wasley.
