For Sale on Craigslist: One Coffin- Skeleton Included

David Burgstrum of Council Bluffs, Iowa has been questioned after attempting to sell a coffin on Craigslist. He neglected to say that the coffin, which was being sold to pay property taxes, came with a skeleton inside.

Dave Burgstrum is one of the last remaining members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, an organization that has a long history in Council Bluffs. The group lost their charter seven years ago and now need to pay property taxes on their hall without donations, which is why the coffin was put up for sale. The coffin itself is from the 1900’s and was used as a representation of death in initiation rituals, but no one knows who the remains belong to.

After noting the ad, police said that it is illegal to sell human remains without the proper identification tags. The skeleton will be sent to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Laboratory in Ankeny, Iowa to receive possible identification. However, chief investigator Karen Foreman says it is unlikely the person will be named. Finding out the race and gender of the skeleton is more likely. If the person is Native American, the bones will be given to a Native American organization.
