After many health scares and trips to the hospital, the internet world was saddened with the news of the death of former South African president, Nelson Mandela. The news however, was erroneously pronounced. As tweets and Facebook statuses spread about his death, Mandela was still recovering from his latest health scare in his Pretoria hospital. It seems that Mandela has been the latest victim of the internet death hoax.
Currently Mandela is still in critical condition after suffering a lung infection on June 8. According to President Zuma, “the doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his well-being and comfort.” The 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader has not been seen in public since South African hosted the 2010 World Cup.
Supporters and well-wishes have been holding vigils and leaving messages of support along with gifts outside Mandela’s Pretoria hospital. Member’s of the Mandela family have been seen coming out to collect the gifts left by supporters. Due to the large amount of crowds in the area, police barricaded the street leading to the hospital’s main entrance.
As the former leader’s health continues to be in critical condition, the South African nation along with the rest of the world continues to wait with unease. US President Obama had planned to visit Mandela but due to Mandela’s condition, the visit did not occur. Mandela will be 95 in July.
