The first original Barbie doll was introduced to little girls in March 1959. When she was originally created, she was made to look perfect. She has had perfect hair, makeup, and a perfect body for 54 years.
However, according to The Epoch Times, Nickolay Lamm, a Pittsburgh artist, is in the process of creating a real life Barbie doll. What does this mean? He wants her to look like what a normal 19-year-old female would look. Not too perfect but still pretty enough.
With the new Barbie, she will have a little bit of a thicker body and won’t look pencil thin in the new creation. She will also have thinner and shorter hair. She won’t look as perfect as she used to but will still be as beautiful as a 19-year-old can be, reports Stuff.
“A lot of people say we shouldn’t criticize Barbie because she is a toy,” Lamm told the website. “However, if there’s a small chance that it’s negatively affecting young girls, and if normal Barbie looks awesome, why not create normal Barbie?”
Barbie has had the same figure for 54 years now. However, because of this, many young girls take a reflection of Barbie and often worry about their own weight wanting to look like she does, with a pencil thin build.
One reader of ECN says that if the orginal barbie were real, she wouldn’t even be able to stand.
Do you realize that if barbie were a real person she wouldn’t be able to stand/live because her spine could not support the proportions of her bust to her waist and hips. It’s just too unrealistic to have a doll like barbie. Though the alternative barbie does look “stocky” that’s seriously a lot closer to what most human proportioned girls. Not to mention barbie’s not 19 years old to begin with so that has got little to do with the point that this new barbie is probably a much better alternative. And for the record I WAS that “short and stocky” at 19. Yes some people are just born to be thin but almost the entire population is not. Though this is in my eyes just a start. I still think we have a long way to go before we actually have a doll that looks like a real woman with/without curves.
Many people say that Barbie is just a toy and shouldn’t be criticized.
Barbie was made for Mattel’s daughter. Give me a break. I didn’t look that short and stocky at 19. And I doubt the average 19 year old does. Some people are just born to be thin. Its not that Barbie is causing eating disorders. Let little girls hold on to their fantasies.. Catherine Zeta Jones is a beautiful woman. And she is not short and stocky. Angelina has had to much botox on her lips. Barbie would not look good with fat lips.
One reader suggests creating multiple barbies of different sizes and races.
It looks like Snookie with blonde hair. I reject this barbie. As someone else said, make a multitude of Barbies and show that women of all types are beautiful. As a man my preference for women aren’t so narrow to find beauty in the way barbie looks, in fact that one Ukrainian woman who had all the plastic surgery to look like barbie is freakish looking. However, from a business standpoint having 800 different molds for Barbie might be a terrible idea for mass production and make it harder to make a profit.
However, if there is any way that the regular Barbie’s looks are affecting how a young girl thinks about her own looks, then a normal Barbie should be created. She doesn’t have to be pencil thin, but a little thicker. With the newer, normal looking Barbie, maybe the young girls won’t worry so much about their looks and weight.
