Brazilian Joao Maria de Souza, 45, died from internal injuries when a cow stepped onto his roof and crashed into his bedroom.
The 3,000 pound cow fell through the roof while the victim and his wife, Leni were asleep in bed.
One news agency reported that the cow had apparently broken through barriers at a nearby farm and wandered onto the de Souzas’ roof which abuts a sharp hillside.
The roof was not sturdy enough to support the animal which then fell eight feet into the bedroom.
De Souza sustained a fractured leg and was taken to a local hospital where he awaited treatment.
The Brazilian man spent several hours in the hospital before he succumbed to his injuries, resulting probably from internal bleeding.
De Souza’s angry brother blamed the hospital for his brothers death saying, “Being crushed by a cow in your bed is the last way you expect to leave this earth. But in my view it wasn’t the cow that killed our Joao, it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined.”
The hospital denied any wrongdoing and maintained de Souza received adequate care.
According to the Daily Mail, De Souza’s mother, Maria, told SuperCanal: “I didn’t bring my son up to be killed by a falling cow. He nearly died when he was two and got meningitis, but I worked hard to buy medicines for him and he survived.”
“And now he’s lying in his bed and gets crushed to death by a cow,” she continued. “There’s no justice in the world.”
The hospital denied any responsibility in the man’s death and maintained that de Souza received appropriate care when questioned by SuperCanal, a Brazilian TV station.
According to the Huffington Post, the owner of the cow has yet to be identified, but may face charges related to de Souza’s death.
