Lioness Killed at the Dallas Zoo by Bite to the Neck

The Channel 5 local NBC affiliate for the Dallas-Fort Worth area is reporting that the lioness Johari was killed Monday afternoon by two lions. Other reports put the attack as being carried off by the male lion Carbara. However, eye witness accounts put the incident as the work of two lion named Kamaia and Denari. Perhaps that is part of the reason why zoo officials have stated that they will not euthanize the lion responsible for killing Johari.

The lions are part of an exhibit called “Lions of the Sahara” and earlier in the day some of the lions performed before a live audience. There was no sign of agitation among the lions that might give zookeepers pause about any risk of danger to anyone including among themselves.

One eyewitness said he was right up at the front glass of the lion exhibit and found the attack traumatic as if a lion kills lionesses, it’s usually in the wild.

While lions may be aggressive, they don’t usually attack others in their pride.

“This is a very rare and unfortunate occurrence. In my 35 years as a veterinarian in zoos, I’ve never seen this happen,” Lynn Kramer, the zoo’s vice president of animal operations, said in a released statement.

“I would have to think something caused the males to react that they don’t normally see every day,” Kramer further explained to Dallas News.

A female witness expressed deep sadness over the incident. One male said that one lion grabbed the female by the throat and her death resulted quickly.

“You could see this lion holding the other one down,” said witness Michael Henshaw. “There was no blood, but it held her down for about 10 to 15 minutes til she was lifeless.”

“We were right there at the front of the glass,” said Dylan Parker. “It was just traumatic. You could see the larger male lion kind of attacking the smaller lioness, and they were just going at it nonstop.”

Obviously, these are not the types of sentiments zoo officials at the state’s oldest & largest zoo want patrons remembering as the leave the venue.

Officials say they have no intention to euthanize the lion who attacked and killed the lioness.

The female lion, 5-year-old Johari, was bitten on the neck by one of two male lions in the exhibit, Kamaia and Dinari, although it’s unclear what lion delivered the fatal bite. Lynn Kramer, the zoo’s vice president of animal operations and welfare, told MyFoxDFW.com said he had never seen such an attack in several decades of experience with the animals. (Dallas Zoo)
