The Mega Millions lottery is heading for a record breaking jackpot total if the difficulty in picking the winning numbers continues to see the jackpot rollover. With no winner for the Friday Dec 13 drawing the jackpot rolled over to an estimated $586 million by Monday morning. With the increase in those hoping to win the huge jackpot the estimated jackpot is expected to rise again before Tuesday’s drawing.
The current record jackpot was claimed at $656 million in April 2013. The current estimated jackpot total of $586 million would give a single winner a cash payout of $316.5 million after taxes are paid to the federal government. Experts believe the current jackpot will be increased as interest in the Mega Millions grows, which could give the first $1 billion lottery jackpot if it rolls over until Christmas.
A rule change making it more difficult to win the jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery has seen no jackpot winner since the rule change in October. The chance of winning was increased from 1 in 176 million to 1 in 259 million, which means the chance of winning the Mega Millions lottery have been made more unlikely than being struck by an asteroid.
