What was supposed to be a happy occasion to photograph a prep school girls basketball team just prior to their next game turned into a life-changing incident for student Lindsey Peterson, who was a star athlete in both basketball and volleyball.
While posing for pictures in the girls’ locker room, Peterson fell and smashed her face into a bench corner.
Her injuries were severe, requiring 100 stitches to close a facial gash, along with the insertion of three plates due to facial fractures. Her coach at West Fork Senior High School in Sheffield, Iowa, also reported there was damage to a few of her teeth as well as her gums from the force of the fall.
Peterson’s traumatic injuries took place on her 18th birthday and have caused an early end to any athletic participation by her this season.
“It was the worst thing I’ve seen,” West Fork head coach Rodney Huber said. “It went straight through her gum, affected a few of her teeth and she had a big gash on the right side of her face.”
Her team mates, although horrified by what they witnessed, managed to pull together and stay focused on the game in order to claim a victory over Riceville High in a 55-18 win. Many who witnessed the competition say that many of the West Fork players looked stunned, as though they had just seen a ghost when they assembled on the court.
