Greater Holland Area, Michigan – Ben Van Houten, age 39, got atop the family trampoline to enjoy some play with his children which include Michigan’s first surviving set of sextuplets. They were born roughly ten years ago after being born three months premature. Sadly, Mr. Houten suffered a heart attack and like 50% of all people who suffer their first heart attack, he passed away. His little tribe of sextuplets all weighed 2lbs 1oz each at the time of their birth. They are Gerrit, John, Kennedy, Nolan, Peyton, and Sammy. By all accounts he was a devoted husband and father. While the sextuplets survived, two of the children were born with cerebral palsy.
The sextuplets were the family’s first successful pregnancy, but two years later they were able to have another child. This time around it was a baby girl. His wife said he was a loving man who it was her blessing to know. He would have been worth knowing if only for a single day she says. His father-in-law said he Ben could always be found enjoying his children and was the best of all of his sons-in-law.
Despite his busy schedule with his children, Mr. Houten found ways to give back to the community. He served as a youth minister and was even a deacon at his local Baptist Church. He was employed by the global testing company known as UTV/SUD where he had worked for many years.
Heart disease runs in his family. It was noted that his own father passed away at age 40. Photographs of him indicate he was clearly involved in the lives of his children be that school work, feeding, and certainly playtime. The Dykstra Life Story Funeral Home will be handling the funeral services and burial. They confirmed his death to reporters.
