Dog protects missing boy: Missing Boy’s Loyal Dog Refuses to Abandon Him
More than 200 volunteers signed up to help search when 3-year old Carson Urness was reported missing after playing in the front yard of his family’s Cooperstown, North Dakota home. Unbeknownst to the search party, although Carson was lost, he was never without a body guard, in the form of his faithful dog, Cooper.
About seven hours into the search, a volunteer located the German Shepherd-Golden Retriever mix and the young boy was discovered huddling under the dog for protection.
It’s believed that Cooper lay atop young Carson to use his own body as a shield to protect him when a thunderstorm broke loose. Heavy rains throughout the region hampered quicker rescue efforts, with most searchers on foot having to stop about four hours into their search efforts.
“You think of the worst, but then I knew Cooper was gone. If anyone was going to find him, they’d just have to find Cooper,” Carson’s mother, Courtney Urness, told WDAZ-TV.
But searchers on ATVs managed to continue, discovering the lost boy and his faithful canine companion about a mile from the family’s farm. Carson was transported to a local hospital in order to ensure that he wasn’t suffering from exposure or any other injuries due to his overnight ordeal, and Cooper followed close behind. His mother said when she noticed Cooper was also missing, the two would eventually be found together.
The boy’s father, Brock Urness, told ABC News he was grateful for everyone who helped look for the boy.
“We’re very thankful for the police and local fire department here and all the people with horses and four-wheelers and the walkers,” Urness told the outlet. “We’re very grateful that they all came and looked and helped us.”
