Brave Preteen Saves Siblings From Deadly Fire

Sibling rivalry can be a big problem in families with multiple children, especially when more than half of the offspring are girls. But the Capers family enjoys a much closer family bond than ever before after their 11 year old middle child Rubye Nix became a savior on Saturday night.

The modest community of Atmore, Alabama was just one of the dozens of states being plagued by severe thunderstorms over the last week. When the power went out in the home, Rubye’s stepfather Jerry left her in charge of her two younger sisters while he went to a nearby home to determine the breadth of the power outage.

As Rubye was enjoying toying with her iPod she noticed flames licking out from under a window air conditioning unit. The smoke and fire would be enough to make any adult panic, but this quick thinking preteen swung into action and performed heroic feat.

“I was on the floor of the living room with Katie in my lap and Saphira asleep. I was playing on my iPod when I looked over and saw smoke and flames coming from the wall under the air conditioner. I thought to myself, ‘I’m getting out of here and I am taking my sisters with me.’”

She swooped up her infant sister Saphira who was sleeping nearby, and her other young sister Katie, 4 to carry them out of the home to safety. Within a matter of seconds, all three sisters were in the safety of their neighbor’s home getting in touch with 911 emergency responders.

When Jerry returned to the home, he was in shock at the sight of the blaze that quickly escalated. He fearlessly rummaged through the front rooms looking for his children before realizing that they had already been safely removed from the home.

Rubye’s mom Toni, at work during the incident, was deeply thankful for the safety of her children. In a touching video, she strokes her daughter’s hair while telling her how proud she is to be the mother of a brave young lady. Rubye remains humble after the experience and credits her parents and teachers for knowing what to do in an emergency.
