Couple Found Dead in Each Other’s Arms – Cause of Death Unknown
Staten Island, New York – A couple was found dead in the Hilton Garden Inn hotel room they had been staying at. Staten Island resident Scott Jacobi, age 35, was found lifeless beside his girlfriend Theresa Mateo, age 37, who was from the Bronx, according to reports Saturday.
Both people were said to be in a loving embrace of one another. Police have speculated the couple may have taken their lives as a suicide pact, but that conclusion has devastated family and friends. For starters, both of them are still very young. Neighbors of Mr. Jacobi were grieved at the news of his death. He was said to be a fine person who did not cause any disturbances to his neighbors.
Their bodies were discovered by hotel staff upon entering their room Friday at 1:00PM after they had failed to check out by the required time. Neither one was responsive so 911 was phoned.
“The housekeeper went in and they were just lying in bed together. There was no blood, nothing like that, no signs that weapons were used,” a hotel employee told The Post.
“It’s really sad. They were in their mid-thirties. That’s young,” the worker said about the mysterious deaths. “Thank God we found them quick.”
As soon as the EMTs arrived and inspected them, they were both pronounced dead at the scene. Terry Delre was Jacobi’s neighbor for the past six years. She recalls never seeing him imbibed and considered him to be a very well-grounded young man she had the pleasure of referring to as a son.
“He was such a good guy. He was such a sweetheart . . . I called him my second son. Clean cut, hardworking, no wild parties, no nothing. I never once seen that boy drunk,” she said.
“I can’t even picture this, he was such a stable-minded guy. I can’t imagine what transpired.”
The couple checked into their room at 6:00PM Wednesday evening. They were both spotted alive and together by 10:00PM the following night which was confirmed from hotel cameras.
As for the cause of death, it remains under investigation at this time. There were no obvious signs of foul play or nor did officers find any narcotics related material in the room.
According to the New York Daily News, a relative, he said he believed they had a suicide pact.
Jacobi, of Staten Island, and Mateo, of the Bronx, had been dating for about eight months, the relative said.
The couple did not leave a suicide note behind.
Officers suspect that they may have died from a drug overdose, but that has not been confirmed. It is not clear if an autopsy or toxicology test has been ordered.
