Operation Island Cats Takes Off

The island of Tonawanda near Buffalo has been overrun by feral and abandoned cats. The cats have been taken there by owners who no longer want them. This island is 35-hectare in size and it has been estimated that the cat population is in the hundreds at least.

One local, Mike Charnock, owner of a marina and cafe not far from the island claims “the cats are making a mess of the island and have even been known to go up on the boats at the marina.”

Another local, Danielle Coogan has even went out of her way to start catching the cats and getting them sprayed and neutered, calling it Operation Island Cats. Once caught he kittens are being put up for adoption and the adults are being put back on the island. This is to help bring down the amount of cats on the Tonawanda island so they won’t keep destroying it and to help reduce the population. In the past 10 days Daniells has caught 10 cats and gotten them fixed so far. That’s a cat a day.

At this rate Danielle will have a fair amount of the population under control by the end of the year. With Operation Island Cats set into play the more people that are aware of what is going on the more people that will be willing to get involved and helped take care of this situation before the cats do completely destroy the island of Tonawanda. These cats are not to blame of course they just are doing what they know and that is surviving and repopulating. They did not get on the island by themselves. Getting them fixed is going to help in many ways though and it will give the kittens a second chance at life.
