A man decapitated himself on a Bronx street in a horrific suicide Monday morning.
Police identified the man as Tomas Rivera, 51, of Port Jervis.
Authorities say the Rivera, who is from upstate New York, tied a metal chain around his neck and secured it to a pole at about 9:20 a.m in Hunts Point.
He then got into his car and accelerated, causing his head to be torn off.
The Post describes the scene:
The 51-year-old man attached a metal chain to a pole on Longfellow Avenue around 9:20 a.m., the sources said.
Sitting in his car, he then wrapped the other end around his neck and hit the gas of the white 2005 Honda Pilot. As the car shot forward, the chain tore his head from his body.
The vehicle continued down the road and crashed into another car that was parked, the impact threw the headless body of Rivera to the pavement. People who passed by and saw the gruesome scene told 911 operators that they thought it had been an accident.
The man’s body was ejected from the car when he hit another parked vehicle, cops told PIX11.
According to the New York Post, passers-by who discovered the gruesome scene and called 911 thought the crash was an accidental collision, the sources said, but when authorities investigated, they discovered what had actually happened and found surveillance video that confirmed the ghastly sequence of events.
No criminality is suspected.
This isn’t the first time a headline read “man decapitates himself.”
According to the Huffington Post, last year a Chicago man who quickly accelerated in a sport utility vehicle with a cable around his neck decapitated himself after a domestic dispute in Yorktown.
York-Poquoson Sheriff Danny Diggs said a deputy responding to a call of a domestic disturbance was taking a statement from the man’s ex-wife when another deputy driving by noticed an SUV pulling a utility trailer that was on fire. Authorities say the man started the fire.
A firefighter noticed a cable around the man’s neck that was attached to a tree. When deputies tried to get the man to exit the SUV, he accelerated and was pulled from the vehicle and decapitated, they say. The SUV kept going for about 150 yards.
Diggs said he arrived to a grisly scene, adding the cable was of the type that could be used to hoist an automobile engine.
“Nobody has ever heard of anything like this,” Diggs said. “It’s a really bizarre incident.”
