At least 22 people were killed and several others injured when lightning struck t several places in the State on Sunday.

Six people were struck and killed by lightning as the drought-prone Prakasam district experienced rain under the influence of a weather system in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday. While Tarlupadu mandal accounted for two deaths, one person each died in Marripudi, Ponnalur, Nagulapupadu and Markapur mandals, district officials said.

As reported by the BBC, thirty-four-year-old D. Chenna Reddy succumbed to lightning at Chennareddipalli in Marripudi mandal, while a 45-year-old woman J. Sankaramma died of burns due to thunderbolt in Mupalla village of Penamalur mandal, according to District Revenue Officer Noor Basha Qasim. In Chavatapalem village, K. Mariadoss (27) was killed by thunderbolt. Twenty-four-year-old Satish Kumar from Madhya Pradesh was killed while he was drilling a borewell in a farm at Vemulakota in Markapur mandal.

In another incident, a 60-year-old woman L .Venkatasubbamma and her daughter-in-law Venkataramana (30) were working in their farm and were killed at Ganugapenta near Tarlupadu. Six people died in the Nellore district. While 36-year-old P. Venkateswarulu and his son Kumar (9) died at Gudiparthi in Venkatachalam mandal, two others – R. Prasad and Chinna Venkaiah – died at Bogolu and Talamanchi respectively. Venkataiah died in a wall collapse in Nellore. Four more people died in the Krisnhna district.

Three workers died at Konapurajupalle, while an agricultural worker Siva Rambabu died at Vadlamanu in Thullur mandal. While two persons died in East Godavari district, one person each died in Anantapur and Srikakulam districts. Meanwhile, female cricket players at Andhra Cricket Association ground at Perecharla in Guntur district had a miraculous escape after lightning struck a palm tree outside the ground when a friendly match was on between Andhra and Tripura teams. The match was abandoned following the incident.
