stop scaring cats cucumbers
A pile of YouTube videos depicting owners scaring their precious cats with unsuspecting cucumbers has been creating a tidal wave of LOLs across the Internet.
If you haven’t seen one yet, here’s what happens in these viral videos: A cat is eating or has its back turned to his owner, when a cucumber is placed behind him without their knowledge. When he turns around, he’s super startled by the vegetable that wasn’t sitting there before.
In a Hello Giggles article, the cats’ frightened reactions are explained by animal behavior specialist Dr. Roger Mugford, who says “I think that the reaction is due to the novelty and unexpectedness of finding an unusual object secretly placed while their heads were down in the food bowl. Cats have to be suspicious of the unknown: It could represent the danger of a snake or another predator. I suspect that there would be the same reaction to a model spider, a plastic fish or a human face mask.”
Another animal behaviorist, Jill Goldman, is far from pleased about these YouTube videos. “If you cause stress to an animal, that’s probably not a good thing. If you do it for laughs it makes me question your humanity.”
So before you go vying for likes on a Facebook video, think about your poor kitty’s feelings first. No laughs are worth having a heart attack over!
