Man hiding in gas arrested at border

A Brazilian tried to enter the United States from Mexico hidden in the gas tank of a sport utility vehicle, US officials reported.

The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said inspectors found a 38-year-old man  in the modified tank of a Toyota Sequoia 2001 on Tuesday morning at the international crossing Calexico, California . An image sensor detected anomalies in the gas tank and rear of the vehicle, reports the New York Daily News.

The agency said the man acknowledged not having permission to enter the United States. Then deportation proceedings initiated criminal proceedings against the driver of the van, a US citizen originally identified as Jonathan Calexico Pantoja, 40.

A criminal complaint alleges that the Brazilian told authorities he paid $ 5,800 to reach the border from Brazil and would pay another 4,000 in Los Angeles.
