Loretta “Hot Lips Hoolihan” Swit Celebrates 75th Birthday
Actress Loretta Swit, best known for portraying Army Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Hoolihan in the long-running television series “M*A*SH”, celebrates her 75th birthday on November 4.
The New Jersey native who studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts began her career on stage in touring productions and doing bit parts on such television shows as “Hawaii Five-O”.
For eleven years Swit was best known to audiences for portraying the frustrated Major Margaret Hoolihan, nicknamed “Hot Lips” on the television series “M*A*S*H”, the role portrayed by Sally Kellerman in the movie.
Many fans don’t realize that it was Swit who originated the role of policewoman Christine Cagney in the movie pilot for the TV series “Cagney & Lacey” but her contract for her role on “M*A*S*H” precluded her jumping ship to take on that role. Active in animal rights causes, she is also an author and singer.
