One of the longest running comic books in history is coming to an end with its 50th anniversary issue. In issue number 700 of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, Peter Parker, the man behind the mask, dies, reports CNN.
The newest issue may spell the end for Peter Parker, but Spider-Man will live on in one of the most unlikely ways. Spider-Man’s longtime enemy Doctor Otto Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus, will become the new Spider-Man. This takes place when Doctor Octopus receives the memories of Peter Parker just before Parker’s death.
Octavius will take over the Spider-Man role in the next issue of the comic book that will begin with issue number 1 and be called “The Superior Spider-Man.”
“This is Moriarty in the head of Sherlock. This is Prince John inside of Robin Hood. This is the greatest villain inside the body of the greatest hero and trying to do good,” Marvel writer Dan Slott explains to USA Today of the twist ending. “This is a guy who was a couple steps way from a bucket list, and now he’s got a whole new lease on life. That’s really going to change him.”
“Superior” editor Stephen Wacker adds of the new series, “We want to do Spider-Man by way of Batman — a little creepier and darker.”
“We’ve never seen a world without Spider-Man, a world without Peter Parker, so his death is a significant event for the Ultimate Comics Universe and we’re going to see how quickly it changes everything. Readers are in for something very new…and surprising because everything that happens in Ultimate Spider-Man #160 and Ultimate Comics Fallout sets the stage for even bigger stories,” explained Axel Alonso, Marvel Entertainment Editor In Chief.
Fan reaction to this turn of events for one of the comic world’s most popular characters has run the gamut from excitement that the series is going in a new direction to complete outrage.
One user on the Marvel.com wrote:
“That is very lame. What they should have done is make spiderman not die trying to save his aunt but get sucked into a spacial vortex. Than continue from there so later he can even make a cameo role as the original spiderman for the new spiderman. This will not only satisfy Peter Parker fans like myself and others but it will open newer plots. In addition you could even make it that he fights …”
Doirath1 was not pleased to hear about another “super hero death.”
Killing off Peter lacks creativity, another death story is lame. I will vote with my feet and not buy the next installment.
