Social media giant Twitter has announced plans to launch a music-specific app this spring following its acquisition last year of We Are Hunted, a hipster music discovery service.
The new Twitter music app for iOS devices will allow individuals to easily follow their favorite musical artists, share discoveries with their friends and receive recommendations based on their personal musical preferences. We Are Hunted has already been testing the hashtag #nowplaying for the last few weeks. Twitter has managed to attract some of the top names in the music business.
Canadian singer Justin Bieber has almost 36 million followers, besting pop artist Lady Gaga by almost a million followers. Katy Perry is also among the most followed Twitter account holders at 33.5 million followers, with Rihanna, Chris Brown’s main squeeze, not too far behind at almost 29 million followers. Whether the new Twitter Music service will be competitive or profitable remains to be seen.
