Was it all part of the comedy skit? That’s what Saturday Night Live audience members and viewers alike were wondering when comedian Melissa McCarthy fell on stage after tottering out in extremely high heels.
After McCarthy, who was performing hosting duties for the second time on the long-running comedy variety show, took a fall, she reached for a nearby chair to help her regain her balance.
Then she began to sing while still on her knees before standing up again and admitting that she didn’t take any time to practice walking in her new platform high heeled shoes which contributed to her tumble.
After being told by SNL producers to practice walking, she told them it wasn’t necessary because “I live in heels” but McCarthy admits that was a little white lie because casual Crocs are really her normal choice for footwear. But she told audience members she couldn’t resist the opportunity to dress to the nines for her second SNL hosting appearance, including the glamorous heels which added about three inches to her height.
As the opening monologue continued, McCarthy complained that her feet had begun to feel numb, then complained that her quadicept muscles were seizing as she fell again to the floor to open the show from a prone position.
