NBC made a decision to pull an upcoming episode of their crime drama program “Hannibal” due to the recent events in Boston. After two Chechen brothers terrorized the city with a sadistic bombing at the Boston marathon finish line, and then led police on a 48 hour investigation, manhunt, chase and standoff; an NBC spokesman that in light of the recent uptrend of violence in the US, the show will not air.
The specific episode guest stars Saturday Night Live alumni, Molly Shannon, in a dramatic change of style. She portrays a woman who manipulates young children to attack and kill others. NBC stated that it was not only the Boston bombing that prompted the decision, but also the December school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. The network will make clips of the episode, essential to character development, available on their website next week. The episode is only being pulled from US markets and will still be shown overseas. The season finale of the series will air June 20th.
“Hannibal” is a first year show that surrounds literary characters created by Thomas Harris in his series of novels. In this television version; Mads Mikkelsen portrays the serial killer, Hannibal Lechter. The program also stars Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne as FBI agents.
