Aubrey Plaza, the 28-year-old actress known for her work in “Parks and Recreation,” shocked the 2013 MTV Movie Awards participants and viewers alike when she interrupted Will Ferrell’s acceptance speech for the Comedic Genius Golden Popcorn award this past April.
As with Kanye West’s now famous ceremony disruption of Taylor Swift’s speech during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, Plaza has received a lot of negative feedback for her actions.
Ferrell was in the middle of his speech when Plaza, who had been sitting in the front row, bounded barefooted onto the stage with the name of her recent independent film written in black ink across her chest and tried to take Ferrell’s award from him while holding a drink cup in one hand. Ferrell asked Plaza, “What’s happening? Are you okay?,” but she seemed unresponsive and confused.
As Plaza returned to her seat, Ferrell introduced her and then said that it was just as they had “rehearsed it.” Some critics believed that Ferrell was mocking West’s actions from 2009. Later though, MTV officials forced Plaza to leave the event and in subsequent interviews Ferrell admitted that Aubrey Plaza appeared intoxicated.
After the broadcast, MTV spoke to Ferrell about Plaza’s behavior. “I think she wanted to tell me something important,” he joked. “It was just a lot of hot liquor breath and sweat. Then she ran away.” About that: According to the New York Daily News, Plaza “may have been drunk.”
