It’s not even sweeps week yet and ABC Family already pulled its newest idea for a show, Alice in Arabia, only four days after authorizing the pilot. According to The Wrap
the show was slated to be about a royal Saudi family who kidnapped an extended teenage family member, in hopes of preserving their family line. They forced the teenager to live with them in their native Saudi home.
Fox News reports that ABC Family had a great vision when they created this plot, but according the network, they pulled the show because controversy is being created that, “was not what [the network] envisioned and is certainly not conducive to the creative process.”
ABC Family has no intention of offending any religion, race, or group, so when the Council on American-Islamic Relations contacted them about some concern with the show, the network decided it was better to be safe than sorry.
The official statement from ABC Family on the cancelation of “Alice in Arabia” reads:
The current conversation surrounding our pilot was not what we had envisioned and is certainly not conducive to the creative process, so we’ve decided not to move forward with this project.
