Why Zac why?: Zac Efron opens up drug and alcohol battle most terrifying night of life

Zac Efron seemed to have it all, good looks, fame and and the hearts of millions of girls. So why did he check himself into rehab in 2013 for alcohol and drug addition?
The “High School Musical” star checked himself into rehab in April of 2013, without much media attention. Now with his life back on track, Efron is opening up about his drug and alcohol addition.

In an interview with the Holloywood Reporter, Efron stated that he had a hard time adjusting to his role of a teen heartthrob in “High School Musical” and “Hairspray” to more adult roles in movies such as, “The Lucky One” and “The Paperboy.” During this time his self esteem took a nose-dive and he spiraled into a world of self-loathing.

“It’s a never-ending struggle,” the actor said of his issues with addiction. “I was drinking a lot, way too much.”

Efron, who admitted himself into rehab last year, confesses that he had turned to alcohol and drug as a mean to escape his overbearing workload.

“I had done films back-to-back-to-back. I was burnt out,” he recalls, referencing to somewhere around 2012 when he had appeared in five films including The Lucky One, The Paperboy and At Any Price. “There was something lacking, some sort of hole that I couldn’t really fill up.”

To fill the empty void in his life, Efron worked constantly with little sleep. Trying to make himself feel better, he turned to drinking and using drugs. In 2009, Leonardo DiCaprio warned Efron about his additions but to no effect.

“[Work] started to become the reason to go anywhere, the reason to talk to anybody,” the actor explained. “The phone calls I received were regarding [work], the ones I wanted to make were regarding scripts or to producers. Slowly but surely, I was no longer living in my house. It was just hotel to hotel. So my hobbies went out the window,” he continues. “I was just so deep into my work, it was really the only thing I had. I clung to it in a way that became a little bit destructive.”

Now out of rehab, Zac said that part of the problem is that, in Hollywood, everything is handed to you. It made self-medicating with drugs and alcohol easier to fall into and harder to stop. He doesn’t regret the past mistakes he has made. Efron states that he has learned and grown from his past experiences.

Now, Zac Efron, is using daily workouts and a good night sleep to keep himself on the right track. He is quick to point out that it is still a daily struggle.

It is hard understand why someone who seems to have everything going for them, would turn to such additions to deal with the issues that so often go hand and hand with fame. Having someone like Zac Efron come forward and state that he made mistakes, he sought out help, and is now on a better path, just might make a difference in someone else’s life.
