Size has long since driven a wedge into the lives, culture and self concepts of women and young girls, so when it was rumored that Sports Illustrated was planning on putting a plus sized model in this year’s 50th anniversary swimsuit edition, regular sized women everywhere rejoiced. However when the magazine did not deliver, on said rumor, a few daring ladies decided to take matters into their own hands.
Swimsuits for All, a plus sized swimsuit company, joined together with Gabi Gregg, a 27-year-old, sized 18 fashion blogger that also goes by “GabiFresh” and three plus sized models, Jada Sezer, Shareefa J and Robyn Lawley, spokes model for Ralph Lauren, to produce a plus sized swimsuit calendar proving that you do not have a stick thin figure to rock a bathing suit.
The group traveled to the beaches of Turks and Caicos for the shoot, which produced a calendar with such an overwhelmingly positive response, that they are considering making it an annual occurrence.
The ladies radiated beauty as they splashed through the sand and surf baring their bodies and proving that you do not have to abide by others views of “perfect” to have a bikini ready body. They recreated some of the poses featured in the latest edition of SI effortlessly, including the topless, backs to the camera, cover shot.
At last count the calendar had over 20,000 views, since it became available on May 27, and anticipates many more as it is available for viewing through September on Swimsuits for All’s website.
This calendar has produced a victory for the healthier body image of women everywhere as it promotes beauty at every size and will, with any luck, teach even the youngest audiences that you do not have to abide by someone else’s view of perfect to be beautiful.
