Kevin McEnroe Arrested In NYC For Buying Drugs
On Tuesday July 15 the eldest son of tennis legend John McEnroe and ex-wife actress Tatum O’Neal was arrested during a “narcotics transaction” in New York’s East Village. According to the New York Post, the 27-year-old was detained by police after a witness claimed to have seen him buying drugs. Niro Meneses was also arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.
Sgt. Jessica McRorie of the NYPD confirmed the incident which took place at approximately 11:24 pm, and that McEnroe was charged with two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance. He was carrying six clear plastic envelopes of what is believed to be cocaine and several pills; a Clorazepate anxiety pill, 20 Oxycodone pain-killing pills, 10 morphine pills, and 10 orange pills which were not identified.
McEnroe did not enter a plea at his arraignment at Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday. Prosecutors asked that his bail be set at $50,000, but he was ultimately released without bail. The Belfast Telegraph reported that McEnroe’s attorney, Isabelle Kirshner, commented that there was “nothing remarkable” about the amount of drugs found on her client.
McEnroe’s mother tweeted about the incident to her 40,000 followers. “Hard day no filter. Some days are better than…” Were the cryptic remarks she posted on Wednesday night. They were accompanied by a cartoon image of two hands clasped together, often signifying prayer. The tweet also linked to a photo, but that was suddenly deleted.
O’Neal has battled drug addiction for decades. In 1995 she lost custody of her three children to her tennis great husband due to her addiction to heroin. She was arrested in 2008 for buying crack cocaine in the vicinity of her Manhattan apartment.
McEnroe’s next court appearance has been set for October 16.
