The 1990 box office hit Pretty Woman grossed over $463 million dollars and netted star actress Julia Roberts an Academy Award nomination, but what may come as a surprise is that ‘Brat Pack’ member Molly Ringwald was offered the role first and turned it down.
Ringwald had already been a huge success when the role was offered to her. She was director John Hughes’ darling, starring in the 1980’s trio of films, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. Concerns over portraying a prostitute led her to reject the role, and her career has never recovered its previous shine. Ringwald moved to France and her Hollywood presence faded off into obscurity, littered with a few made-for-television movies and no big-screen credits since her cameo in 2001’s Not Another Teen Movie.
Had she accepted the role, it’s quite possible that such a mature role could have helped her make the transition from teen talent to adult actress. The world may never know what might have been. However, Ringwald is now the mother of three children and is happily married to Panio Gianopoulos, a writer and editor. She is active in taking small roles and enjoying her family life.
