Nineteen-year-old Mirjana Puhar, along with two others, were found shot to death in her boyfriend’s Charlotte, North Carolina home on Tuesday, February 24. According to the Charlotte Observer, a friend of Ms. Puhar found her body and that of her boyfriend, twenty-three-year-old Jonathan Alvarado. Alvarado’s roommate, twenty-one-year-old Jusmar Gonzaga-Garcia was found shortly after.

Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of gunshots. They are charging nineteen-year-old, Emmanuel Jesus Rangel with three counts of first-degree murder. Police believe the shooting was drug-related and that the shooter knew the victims. Rangel was also charged with connections to another shooting that occurred earlier that week in Matthew, North Carolina where one man died and another was seriously wounded. The shooting took place in the parking lot of the Microtel Inn, located fourteen miles southeast of Charlotte.

A native Serbian, Ms. Puhar grew up in North Carolina after her family fled war-torn Serbia. During her high school years, she skipped school several times, eventually dropping out and taking a job at McDonalds. Just before being cast on the show ‘America’s Next Top Model’, she earned her GED. She was a contestant in the show’s twenty-first season but was eliminated in the tenth episode.

Tyra Banks and Ken Mock, executive producers of ‘America’s Next Top Model,’ released a statement saying they were “deeply saddened” by the news. They went on to say “She was a vivacious, promising young woman. Our hearts and prayers go out to her loved ones.”
