Just days after Presidential hopeful Donald Trump made derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants, NBC will no longer be airing the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, according to media reports Monday.
“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values,” reads a network statement released to Deadline on Monday. “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump.”
The statement continues: “To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC.”
Mexico is “sending people that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They are bringing drugs and bringing crime and their rapists,’’ Trump asserted during his campaign launch earlier this month.
Trump has already said he wouldn’t be appearing on the network’s show “The Apprentice” because of his presidential bid.
The network’s move came on the heels of a change.org petition that garnered more than 200,000 signatures urging NBC to drop Trump.
