Rehab, depression, lupus … Of all the rumors that circulated about Selena Gomez, only one was actually founded. The 23 year-old singer revealed that she actually had to fight against lupus, early 2014.
In an interview with Billboard website to mark the release of her album RevivalOctober 9, Selena Gomez spoke for the first time his illness, why she had to cancel her concerts in Asia and Australia between January and February 2014.
“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” Gomez said
Around the same time, reports that she had been diagnosed with lupus began to circulate, but neither Gomez nor her reps would confirm or deny the news. At the time, her tour cancelation prompted rumors that Gomez had gone to rehab.
“I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re a–holes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again,” she told the magazine.
Autoimmune disease, lupus is characterized by a dysfunction of the immune system attacks the body’s cells and destroys them. The problems with the disease are numerou and can anything from swelling and joint pain with blurred vision, through malfunctioning kidney or heart, in the most serious cases.
WebMD notes that there are several chemo drugs used to treat some inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
Gomez isn’t the only high-profile celebrity to be diagnosed with the disease. Singers Toni Braxton and Seal both have the disease.
