My wife has been asleep for days now and her body is shutting down quickly,” Feek wrote Monday on his blog, This Life I Live.
“The hospice nurse came again this morning and said Joey will most-likely only be with us for a few more days… at the most.”
Rory Feek, 50, shared a touching photo of his daughter Heidi, 29, clutching her dying stepmom’s hand on Friday.
“…our oldest daughter Heidi by her mama’s side last night. Holding on and letting go,” he wrote on Instagram.
Diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer shortly after the birth of their daughter Indiana, Joey has been undergoing both radiation and chemotherapy to fight the disease. However, in November 2015 it returned in an aggressive form that spread to much of her body. Doctors released Joey to a hospice to spend her final days with her family. She wanted to stick around long enough to see one more Christmas, the Grammy Awards and her daughter’s second birthday. She survived to see all three.
Now, according to the hospice nurse, she is sleeping deeply, her body is shutting down, and so she has only a few days at most to live.
Rory’s blog post wrote about Joey’s last moments with her daughter. She gave Indiana a final kiss and told the little girl how much she loved her. Before that, she said goodbye to her father and mother, and to her sisters. Joey is just 40 years old.
As Joey + Rory, the couple were a successful musical duo in the country and bluegrass field.
