Chyna wrestler: CHYNA WWE LEGEND DEAD ‘Possible Overdose’

Joan Laurer, the ground breaking female wrestler known as Chyna, has died.

Police in Redondo Beach, California confirm that Laurer, 46, was found dead in her apartment on Wednesday.

The police were called by a friend who, unable to reach Ms. Laurer by telephone for several days, went to the home and found her not breathing, according to Sgt. Shawn Freeman, a spokesman for the city’s Police Department.

“It is with deep sadness to inform you that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero. Joanie Laurer aka Chyna, the 9th wonder of the world, has passed away,” said a post on her website.

“Officers arrived on scene and discovered a deceased female inside the location,” he said in a statement. “There are no indications or signs that the death was a result of foul play. From the preliminary investigation, it appears that the deceased passed away prior to being discovered by the friend.”

TMZ adds:

Officers are on scene right now. We’re told they are investigating as a possible overdose, due mainly to her history with drugs. Prescription bottles were found in the home, but there were no illegal drugs … according to our sources.

After graduating from the University of Tampa, Chyna started training in the world of professional wrestling and in 1996 she was named the “Rookie of the Year for the Women’s Championship,” according to her website. She wrestled in the Royal Rumble and King of Ring tournaments and became the only undefeated Women’s Champion in WWF (World Wrestling Federation) history.
