The Mega Millions lottery reached the second highest level ever for a US lottery at $636 million. The winning numbers were announced and are the following: 8, 20, 14, 17, and 39. The Mega Ball pick was the number 7.

Authorities say a winning ticket was sold in San Jose, California. However, Paula Otto, lead director for Mega Millions, said that the ticket tally was not complete and could not rule out that others had also made the winning pick.

Perhaps the lingering economic woes in California caused a gold rush of sorts for the California lottery because at one point, fools or participants were purchasing tickets at the rate of 25,000 per minute. Unemployment remains high in California. Alex Traverso, the spokesman for Mega Millions, called the public response “amazing”. It should always be noted that with every lottery, the Mega Millions group is a guaranteed winner.

If only one winning ticket is sold that person will have the option to take a lump sum in the amount of $341 million. For those who didn’t win, they can start buying tickets towards the next prize which now starts off at $15 million. The next drawing will be held this coming Friday.
