Anonymous Claims Responsibility for Hacking into DOJ Website

The unknown coalition of internet hackers known as “Anonymous” have claimed responsibility for the security breach in the Department of Justice’s website Saturday morning. The breach led to the shutdown of the website and claims by Anonymous that they were able to secure government data which they plan to release.

Anonymous claimed their actions were retaliation for the death of ace hacker Aaron Swartz who was found dead in his apartment on January 11 of this year. Swartz was the founder of the RSS website Reddit and was under investigation by the government for stealing four million articles from the journal archiving site JSTOR.

The government alleged that Swartz used high tech computers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to steal the articles. His death was ruled a suicide but has since prompted criticism that he was coerced into it by the stress of the government’s criminal lawsuit.
