Is AI the Last Frontier or Last Threat?
According to Elon Musk, artificial intelligence, or AI, is a real threat to humanity. This is an interesting take on technology considering Musk is the founder of innovative tech companies like Tesla and Space X. However, he stood by his claim at the the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AeroAstro Centennial Symposium.

He claimed that AI needs to be monitored or it could literally take on a mind of its own with disastrous proportions. Musk made a reference to the Terminator movie suggesting that the outcome is quite possible if humans are not careful in keeping AI in check. He even went as far as developing AI to “summoning the demon.”

This is an interesting perspective on artificial intelligence coming from a man who is something of an expert in smart computers. If a man such as Musk is suggesting that AI computers could eventually threaten mankind, then it definitely makes one ponder at the possibility. Musk thinks that artificial intelligence could even be more dangerous than nuclear weapons if it ends up in the wrong hands. This would be a true “existential crisis” that could be easily avoided. However, Musk maintains that if AI is not well monitored than the worst could happen. At the very least, it makes one consider the events that would unfold if it did come to pass. If a smart computer pioneer suggests to watch AI, then the world should follow suit.

Another well known scientist, Stephen Hawking, has also suggested that AI could be dangerous if it develops the ability to think for itself. If technology can easily adapt and preserve its core being, then there is no telling what could happen. Any one of the scenarios dreamed up in Hollywood could come true due to the increasing ability of technology to self govern.
