A new species of frog found in the Central American country of Costa Rica is being compared to Jim Henson’s most famous Muppet and apparently the two look most alike in the eyes.
Scientist Brian Kubicki said the tiny, semi-translucent glass-frog specimen, which he named ‘Hyalinobatrachium dianae‘, is very delicate and its presence “is a good indicator of the general health of the eco-system. “The new species, of which six specimens have been found so far, is clearly different due to its colouring, skin texture and the distinctive sound of its call.Glass frogs are only found in certain parts of Central and South America and are characterised by skin so translucent that their organs are visible.
The glass frog was discovered by zoologists working at the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Centre and has been detailed in a study published in the online journal Zootaxa.
The frog has been named in honour of the senior author Brian Kubicki’s mother Janet Diane Kubicki, and also Diana the Roman goddess of the hunt, wild animals and woodland, according to Wired.
