Hornets change name to Pelicans
Keeping good on a promise made when he bought the team the New Orleans Hornets owner has unveiled the teams new name, the New Orleans Pelicans.
The NBA team will be known as the Pelicans from next season with the team’s uniform also changing to blue, red and gold; after buying the struggling franchise in April 2012 Tom Benson promised fans and NBA officials a rebrand would take pace. New orleans have been known as the Hornets since their time in Charlotte with Benson claiming the name has little to do with Louisiana or the Gulf Coast region of the south.
Using the Brown Pelican as the team’s new symbol the once endangered animal acts as a symbol of the return of the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. The Brown Pelican is the state bird of Louisiana and features on the majority of state symbols; the Pelicans name was also used twice by minor league basketball teams based in New Orleans.
