Twenty-four year old Aimee Copeland has been hospitalized since early May when a gash on her leg sustained during a zip-line accident caused flesh eating bacteria to almost cost the young woman her life.
Her father Andy Copeland reports that Aimee has finally spoken, uttering the simple statement – “Whoa, wow, this is amazing”, referring to her reaction at being able to speak again after being sedated in the hospital for so long.
Copeland developed necrotizing fasciitis from bacteria that began attacking her body after entering the gash in her leg. She is especially susceptible to this disease because her immune system is already compromised with lupus.
In an effort to save her life, doctors have removed most of Copeland’s left leg below the hip, her right foot and both hands. Dad Andy is calling her survival a miracle since when she entered the hospital, she was given a less than 1 percent chance of recovery.
