Katy Perry, famous for having Kissed a Girl, sets the bar even higher with her Alice in Wonderland style video that pairs fantasy with autobiography.
The point of the video is clear: Katy Perry is a strong woman who will not be crushed by celebrity life.
According to Perry, the video’s once-upon-a-time concept is inspired by all the dark-and-twisty feelings she experienced during the Teenage Dream era.
“It’s kind of like the labyrinth of my life in the last two years,” Perry said during an MTV First presentation. “I just wanted to tell a story about myself kind of going through this journey, maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze. There’s good parts, there’s bad parts, and the whole time there’s the younger version of me leading me through.”
“This song in particular is a dose of reality,” Perry said in a video posted to MTV’s site Monday. “It’s kind of like coming down from a high. You’ve been on cloud nine for so long, and it can’t always be so sweet and sometimes you need to realize that, and you have to pick yourself up and move forward and face the facts of life and know that this is just a lesson you learn and you’re stronger because of it.”
The video begins with Katy literally going through the looking glass into an eerie looking labrynth. As the walls close in on her, Katy summons super human strength to keep herself safe. After this, she meets up with a young version of herself.
Together, Katy and little Katheryn overcome trials and defeat a disingenuous prince charming and Little Kathryn rides away, both of them living happily ever after.
