On Monday June 25, 2012 Obama was booed at a fundraising event in Boston for making a joke about Red Sox player Kevin Youkilis.

“Finally Boston, I just want to say: Thank you for Youkilis,” Obama said.

Youkilis had just been traded to Obama’s home team in Chicago, the Chicago White Sox and Obama thanked him for being traded.

It was evident that he was surpised by the boos that arose from the audience after he made the quote.

Obama was quick to apologize to the crowd.

“I didn’t think I’d get any boos out of here,” Obama said. ”I should not have brought up baseball. I understand. My mistake. My mistake. You gotta know your crowd.”

Some are reporting that the boos from the crowd were in fact cheers of “Youk” which is the nickname Boston fans use for player Kevin Youkilis.

“Anyone who was in that room last night knows that the preponderance of people shouting in response to what the president said about Kevin Youkilis were saying ‘Yook’ and not ‘Boo,’ for God’s sake,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney, himself a Red Sox fan.
