Barry Becher, infamous Ginsu Knife spokesman, has died at the age of 71. He pioneered infomercial sales techniques still used today, including the 800 number. Other products include Miracle Slicer, Armourcote Cookware and a gaggle of other gadgets.
Becher was born in Brooklyn to a chemical engineer and an opera singer. He left for Rhode Island after high school, passing broken-down cars on the highway. He figured he might be able to make a living in the auto business.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Leslie Friedman Becher. Other survivors include a sister plus two daughters, four step-children and 10 grand children.
Becher suffered with kidney cancer. He died in his hospital room on Friday as a result of complications to surgery. The funeral was Monday. Family is considering the words “But wait, there’s more” for his tombstone.
