Batman Shooting: Gunman Kills 24 At Dark Knight Rises Opening
It is a sad day when going to the movies is no longer safe.
At a midnight showing of Dark Knight Rises in Aurora Colorado, 12 people were shot and killed, reports the Associated Press.
The gunman, who has yet to be identified, entered the Century 16 theater in Aurora, Colorado and opened fire.
“We saw people running around and screaming,” a man, who was not identified, told CNN affiliate KUSA.
Not only did the gunman kill 14 people, 50 other people have also been injured. Those injured were being treated at several area hospitals.
Witnesses say that the gunman began firing shots during one of the action scenes.
“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Oates said at a news conference.
An eyewitness said the man was dressed all in black wearing a riot helmet, bullet proof vest and goggles
“The shooting apparently went on for some time,” he said.
One young man told KUSA that he was out front of the theater with friends when the shooting broke out.
“Next thing you know you hear ‘boom’ like tear gas, a bomb. … Then you hear gunshots go off, like a fully automatic weapon. [There were] like 50-60 gunshots,” he told KUSA.
“I was just worried about getting out of there,” he told NBC News.
The man, who did not give his name, said he heard gunfire continue for at least 20 minutes.
“People were coming out of there screaming, some of the people were coming out of there bleeding. … People were coming out with their shirts covered in blood,” he said.
Police found the suspect behind the movie theatre, hiding behind a dumpster.
“He did not resist. He did not put up a fight,” Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.
he suspect was not immediately identified
Everyone thought that the shots were part of the movie. Aurora police do have a suspect in custody.
President Barack Obama issued a statement following the shooting:
“Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific shooting in Colorado.
“My administration will do everything we can to support the people of Aurora in this difficult time.”
