Binders Full of Women
During October 16th’s presidential debate at Hofstra University, much was said but one line in particular stands out.
Mitt Romney’s explanation of how he found qualified female candidates for his cabinet as governor by going to women’s groups who gave him “binders full of women.” It was a phrase ripe for the picking, going viral almost instantly.
“I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks,’ and they brought us whole binders full of women,” Romney said. The quote immediately went viral on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and YouTube.
According to CBS News, the hashtag #bindersfullofwomen was trending worldwide on Twitter. The Twitter parody accounts @RomneyBinders and @Romneys_binder were quickly launched and had netted more than 32,000 and 13,000 followers respectively, by Wednesday morning.
Politico.com reported it as the third most searched phrase on Google last night.
The same site has also reported that the Obama group has decided to capitalize on the trending topic by running their own promoted tweet when Twitter users search the phrase. “Binders full of women now” has a presence on most every form of social media from Facebook, twitter, tumblr and more.
It is almost beside the point what Governor Romney said, as the American public seems to have heard only this one very catching phrase.
