Arizona Elects Sinema First Openly Bisexual Congresswoman
Not only did the 2012 fall elections introduce more women legislators into both houses of Congress, it also saw the first openly bisexual congresswoman elected with the victory of Krysten Sinema.
Advocate reports, Sinema was elected to represent Arizona’s ninth district. The attractive blond, who is openly bisexual, defeated opponent Vernon Parker by more than 6,000 votes.
She was financially backed in the highly competitive race by The Victory Fund, whose special cause is backing candidates from the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender communities.
Sinema has been active in LGBT rights and causes for the past several years, including campaigning against a Proposition in the state which would have banned gay marriages and civil unions from being recognized in the state.
Her campaign for Congress also included smear attacks, including critics characterizing her as an individual who did not support the traditional family. Sinema said she remained optimistic throughout her campaign that she would emerge the victor.
