Retired Cardinal Mahony Relieved of Public Duties

Responding to the recent uproar about newly released sex abuse files that clearly show that retired Cardinal Roger Mahony’s participated in helping to shield priest pedaphiles from prosecution, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez has announced that Mahony has been officially stripped of any administrative or public duties involving the church.

Gomez took the unusual action against one of the Roman Catholic church’s best known officials after personally reviewing confidential files which detail how Mahony and his associates aided and abetted priests accused of child molestation, often transferring them from one parish to the next and even advising them not to return to California to avoid criminal prosecution.

Gomez acknowledged that Mahony and other church officials failed to do their duty in protecting children who had been abused and in alerting the proper authorities to deal with their abusers. Mahony’s second in command while in Los Angeles and most recently Bishop of Santa Barbara Thomas Curry, has voluntarily resigned from his position.
